Averta is one of the most widely used contemporary typefaces to emerge from Greece, trusted by designers and brands around the world for its clarity, versatility, and distinctive personality.
The challenge was to create a visual identity that would reflect these qualities without falling into the common conventions of type foundry branding. Rather than presenting the typeface through a purely technical or minimalist lens, the goal was to develop a system that feels approachable, expressive, and adaptable, just like Averta itself.
At the core of the concept lies the relationship between typography and nature.
During the early stages of the project, conversations with type designer Kostas Bartsokas and a visit to his second-home island of Thassos revealed a strong connection between his work and the environment that surrounds him. Thassos, one of the greenest islands in the Aegean, is shaped by a rich landscape of pines, olive trees, fig trees, and holly. These natural forms became the starting point for a visual language that could express the human and crafted character of Averta.
Much like the typeface itself, leaves are systems of balance, rhythm, structure, and organic variation. Their forms feel familiar yet endlessly diverse, creating a natural parallel to the flexibility of typography.
The visual identity was built around a custom library of leaf prints created from local species associated with Thassos. Each leaf was collected, printed, digitized, and transformed into a versatile set of graphic assets. This process introduced an element of craftsmanship while creating a visual system capable of adapting to countless applications.
The resulting identity allows typography and nature to coexist. In some applications, a single leaf can appear as a subtle accent, bringing elegance and restraint. In others, multiple leaves can form rich compositions that communicate energy, creativity, and playfulness. The system remains consistent while offering enough flexibility to support a wide range of communication needs.
This approach mirrors one of Averta’s greatest strengths: its ability to perform equally well across very different contexts. Whether used in sophisticated editorial design, packaging, digital products, branding systems, or educational environments, Averta adapts without losing its character.
Rather than building a visual identity around trends or decorative gestures, the project seeks to express the qualities that have made Averta so enduring: clarity, flexibility, craftsmanship, and a distinctly human approach to type design.
